When Bafana Bafana coach Hugo Broos announced the current national team squad he left out Kaizer Chiefs captain and first choice goalkeeper Brandon Petersen.

The Belgian coach mentioned that the reason he left out the keeper was because Petersen (in his opinion) has 'weak moments' in his game, criticism that could potentially damage the confidence of the Amakhosi player.
Now, former Chiefs and Swaziland national team goalkeeper William "Cool Cat" Shongwe has told Soccer Laduma that coaches are there to encourage players and not to criticise them in this manner.
On the other hand, Shongwe has also stated that Petersen has a strong personality and will take that criticism head on to improve his game.
"I think the national team coach could have found a better way of addressing the issue than saying he can't select the player because of the mistakes," Shongwe told the Siya crew.
"That's discouraging him instead of working with him to bring back his confidence. As I said before, I personally spoke to him to keep his head up and what the technical team at Chiefs has done to keep him as the first choice and captain of the team is the right thing to do to help him with his confidence.
"That's what the national team coach should also have done. Support him, encourage him and not criticise him.
"But I think the boy is strong because he has taken it very well and has been doing well despite those few mistakes. He is a very good goalkeeper," Shongwe told Soccer Laduma.
