The Super Eagles ran out 1-0 winners against Rwanda in their latest World Cup qualifiers as they jumped up to third in Group C, six points behind South Africa.
It was a slow start for Eric Chelle's side as they failed to win any of their first four games, but turned things around to give themselves a fighting chance to qualify for the 2026 event.
Their chances for qualification could be boosted further as South Africa could still be docked three points after they had mistakenly selected Teboho Mokoena to face Lesotho in the first game, while he was supposed to serve a one-game suspension.
According to Sports247, Chelle revealed the win against Rwanda was a huge confidence-booster for the Super Eagles, but said they would need to double their efforts against the group leaders.
"We are happy because we won 1-0, and we can now face South Africa with more confidence," Chelle said. "I am happy, because we still have a chance.”
"My job is to make this team play well, and my choice matters, but the most important thing is the fitness of each player. This is my job, my heart, my gallery, and I respect all my players,” he concluded.
