New-Look Bafana Fire Blanks Against Tanzania

A new-look Bafana Bafana side were held to a goalless draw by Tanzania in an international friendly on Friday night.

International Friendly

Result: South Africa 0-0 Tanzania

Date: 06 June 2025

Venue: Peter Mokaba Stadium

Coach Hugo Broos handed international debuts to Khulumani Ndamane, Deano Van Rooyen, Simphiwe Salepe while Fawaaz Basadien was named captain for Bafana on the day.

The South Africans dominated in the early stages of the first half, with Patrick Maswanganyi and Oswin Appollis seeing a lot of the ball in the final third, with the former seeing his goal-bound strike cleared away in the opening 10 minutes.

Tanzania, meanwhile, struggled to get the ball off their South African counter-parts and had a hard time containing Appollis on the left wing but they were left off by the hosts' decision-making in the final third.

That proved to be the trend for the remainder of the first half, with Thalente Mbatha squandering the team's biggest chance in the final ten minutes by blazing over the crossbar after a well-worked passing move.

It was more of the same in the second period for Bafana, which prompted coach Broos to make changes after the hour mark as Nkota Mohau, Relebohile Mofokeng and Sinoxolo Kwayiba entered the pitch to freshen up the attack while Ricardo Goss made way for Renaldo Leaner in goals.

The introduction of Mofokeng certainly raised the tempo of the team while the crowd at the Peter Mokaba Stadium expressed their delight with the arrival of the Orlando Pirates star.

However, the flurry of changes ultimately did not make the desired impact for South Africa, who struggled to carve out any clear-cut chances at the Tanzanian goal until stoppage time when Mofokeng spotted the goalkeeper off his line from 40 yards out, but his lob sailed onto the roof of the net as the encounter ended scoreless in Polokwane,

Broos' charges will be back in action on Tuesday evening against Mozambique.

Here's how they lined up:

South Africa: Goss, Van Rooyen, Moloisane, Khulumani, Basadien, Mbatha, Selepe, Moremi, Maswanganyi, Appollis, Cupido

Subs: Chaine, Leaner, Mbuthuma, Sibisi, Kabini, Kwayiba, Le Roux, Nkota, Mbokazi, Mobbie, Mphangule, Mofokeng.
