While every player can argue that they deserve to be amongst the chosen 23, a number of players can feel hard done by after being left out.

Having scored more goals than Lionel Messi in the MLS League Cup, and having scored more league goals than Percy Tau respectively, Bongokuhle Hlongwane and Fagrie Lakay have reason to feel aggrieved by their omissions from the final squad.

Moreover, on a local front both Khanyisa Mayo and Iqraam Rayners have been banging in the goals for Cape Town City and Stellenbosch respectively, yet they could not crack a nod for the trip to the Ivory Coast.

Defensively, Kaizer Chiefs' Given Msimango has been a mainstay in his first season at Naturena, yet Broos has overlooked the towering defender. Rivaldo Coetzee, who has been immense for Mamelodi Sundowns, both locally and on the continent, could not make the final 23-man squad either.

Take a look at some of the players left out by Broos:

Bongokuhle Hlongwane – 38 games, 17 goals, 5 assists

Fagrie Lakay: 41 games, 12 goals, 4 assists

Iqraam Rayners – 23 games, 11 goals, 1 assist

Tashreeq Matthews - 30 games, 9 goals, 10 assists

Khanyisa Mayo: 16 games, 7 goals, 2 assists

Given Msimango – 19 games, 7 clean sheets

Rivaldo Coetzee: 18 games, 10 clean sheets
