Bafana's Nine Months Payment Delay

Bafana's Nine Months Payment Delay

The South African Football Association has confirmed it's in the process of making payments for money owed to Bafana Bafana players – some nine months later.

Following wins against Mali in the Nelson Mandela Challenge back in September and Sudan in their Africa Cup of Nations qualifier in November, it is understood the entire group was due around R90 000 each as an incentive.

Bafana also faced Ghana, but because they suffered defeat in that Afcon qualifier away from home they are not paid a bonus.

"We owe them for two matches," SAFA chief financial officer Gronie Hluyo confirmed to the Siya crew on Monday.

"We were behind with our payments because we experienced some financial challenges. What we have been doing is trying to pay all the outstanding monies, from clubs in the ABC Motsepe League, Banyana Banyana and the only one that is left now is Bafana, which is next on our list of payments – we would have paid by July 15."

The impact of the Coronavirus pandemic would have no doubt added to SAFA's financial woes, but these matches took place last year, long before the deadly virus would have had a serious effect on the association, which is also currently restructuring.

"It is more or less that amount (R90 000) yes, but in about three weeks it should be paid," Hluyo added when asked about the sum expected by the players.
