Result: Real Madrid 2-0 FC Barcelona (Real won 5-1 on aggregate)

Date: 16 August 2017

Venue: Santiago Bernabeu

Real Madrid, who were without Cristiano Ronaldo, won the 2017 Spanish Super Cup after defeating FC Barcelona 5-1 on aggregate.

Los Blancos came into the encounter with a healthy lead, after defeating Barca 3-1 at the Camp Nou on Sunday evening.

The host broke the deadlock after just four minutes when Marco Asensio picked the ball up 25-yards out and rifled home a superb effort into the top corner.

Barca had a chance to level matters in the 15th minute when Lionel Messi was played through on goal but Keylor Navas rushed off his line to deny the Argentine.

Real went agonisingly close to doubling their lead in the 32nd minute when Lucas Vazquez rattled the upright from 18-yards out.

The home side were not to be denied seven minutes later when Karim Benzema turned in the box and volleyed into the bottom corner, 2-0.

The score remained 2-0 at the halftime break.

Messi came close to reducing the deficit in the 53rd minute but the Argentine's powerful effort crashed against the crossbar.

Zinedine Zidane opted for a change after the hour as Mateo Kovacic made way for Casemiro.

The visitors went close once again in the 71st minute when Luis Suarez's header was kept out by the upright just moments before Keylor Navas denied Sergi Roberto.

Ernesto Valverde threw on Gerard Deulofeu and Lucas Digne for the remaining 15 minutes, but they were unable to pull a goal back.

Real saw out the closing stages with relative ease as they secured their second trophy of the new season, following the UEFA Super Cup triumph over Manchester United last week.
