Spanish Super Cup
Result: FC Barcelona 1-3 Real Madrid
Date: 13 August 2017
Venue: Camp Nou
Cristiano Ronaldo scored a stunning goal and was sent off moments later, as Real Madrid defeated FC Barcelona 3-1 in the first leg of the Spanish Super Cup.
Zinedine Zidane opted to start Cristiano Ronaldo on the bench, while Erneso Valverde handed a start to Gerard Deulofeu in the attack.
It was an evenly contested affair in the opening exchanges, although neither side could carve out a clear-cut chance in the opening 20 minutes.
Los Blancos went close to breaking the deadlock in the 36th minute but Marc-Andre Ter Stegen was on hand to keep out Gareth Bae's close-range effort.
That proved to be the final chance of the opening half, as Barca failed test Keylor Navas with any serious efforts.
Zidane's charges broke the deadlock five minutes into the second half, as Gerard Pique turned Marcelo's cross into his own net.
Both sides opted for a change after 58 minutes as Ronaldo replaced Benzema for Real, while Deulofeu made way for Denis Suarez for the hosts.
Barca should have been level in the 73rd minute when the ball dropped to Sergio Busquets, who blazed over from six-yards out.
The hosts were then awarded a penalty three minutes later when Keylor Navas was judged to have fouled Luis Suarez. Messi stepped up and converted the spot-kick, 1-1.
Barca's joy was short-lived as Ronaldo cut onto his right foot before curing the ball into the top corner from the edge of the box.
Ronaldo's night came to an early end, as he was sent off just a minute later as he picked up his second booking for simulation. He received his first booking for taking off his shirt during his goal celebration.
Despite being a man dow, Real sealed the win in the 89th minute as Asensio rifled home a superb effort from the edge of the box, 1-3.
