The 2014 champions, who needed a win in their final game to advance to the round of 16, ended bottom of Group F after a shock 2-0 defeat to Korea Republic on Wednesday afternoon.

The first-round elimination was Germany's first since 1938 and their supporters in the stadium were left fuming with their side's poor performance.

According to the Daily Mirror, fans close to the tunnel area vented their frustration at the distraught German players, with Ozil eventually exchanging words with some of them.

The 29-year-old was reportedly standing up for his teammates and had to be restrained by one of his team's backroom staff members.

A Germany coach was also seen shouting back at the dissatisfied fans, who themselves were being restrained by stewards.

Following the disappointing result, coach Joachim Low refused to blame his side's poor display on Ozil alone.

"It was not only Ozil, but some other players also did not perform as they usually would. I take responsibility for that and stand up for that, but I thought it was a good team," he said, according to the Daily Mirror.

"I did not think Thomas Muller had been that convincing in the first two matches and I wanted to make a point there (by dropping him).

"Towards the finish, when we realised we needed a goal, we took a defender out late on and that meant we became less structured, but we could not wait, we had to risk.

"We needed to throw things forward, and it opened things up in defence."
