The 26-year-old has had an excellent year, winning the UEFA Champions League, the Copa del Rey and the UEFA Supercup with Real Madrid and scoring three goals to take France to the quarter finals of the World Cup, where they were eliminated by eventual winners, Germany.
Benzema's club coach, Carlo Ancelotti spoke highly of his player, after handing the award over to the Frenchman.
"The period in which there is Karim is comparable to that of the team," he told France Football magazine
"He is very good at all levels.
"Karim takes advantage of the good work of his teammates and his teammates take advantage of the Karim's excellent work. Not just by scoring, but also in helping the team to develop his game."
The Real Madrid number nine has also enjoyed a great start to the 2014/15 season, finding the net on 14 occasions and providing eight assists in 21 appearances in all competitions.
Benzema's trophy haul, goal tally and individual performances for Real Madrid this season have helped France Football to decide that he has been better in 2014 than his fellow French teammates such as Raphael Varane, Franck Ribery, Samir Nasri and Paul Pogba.
