FIFA Confederations Cup Report: Russia v Portugal 21 June 2017

FIFA Confederations Cup

Result: Russia 0-1 Portugal

Date: 21 June 2017

Venue: Otkrytie Arena

Cristiano Ronaldo scored the only goal of the game to hand Portugal a 1-0 win over Russia in their second FIFA Confederations Cup tie.

The Portuguese broke the deadlock in the eighth minute when Raphael Guerrero picked out Ronaldo with a superb cross and the forward headed home at the far post.

Russia, on the other hand, were finding it tough to maintain possession of the ball, which led to a lack of chances in the opening 20 minutes.

Selecao had a chance to extend their lead in the 32nd minute, but Roman Akinfeev produced a good stop to deny Ronlado from close range.

Russia carved out their first chance five minutes before the break when Golovin whipped a cross to the front post but Smolov could no turn his effort on target.

The score remained 1-0 to the European champions at the halftime break.

Five minutes into the second half, Akinfeev came to Russia's rescue as he produced a stunning reflex save to keep out Bernado Silva's header.

Ronaldo was presented with a chance to double Portugal's lead in the 62nd minute, but he failed to direct his header on target from close range.

Russia looked more threatening after 70 minutes, which saw Portugal reduced to counter attacks. Prompting Fernando Santos to introduce Gelson Martins in the 77th minute.

The hosts pushed for an equaliser in the closing stages of the second but were unable to bypass the Portugal defence.

Selecao held on for the victory and have temporarily moved top of Group A.
