After an enthralling 3-3 draw, France and Switzerland were forced to slug it out in extra-time before the round of 16 match eventually needed to be decided via a penalty shootout.
With every taker having found the back of the net, Mbappe stepped forward to take the fifth spot-kick for Les Bleus, and it was one the 22-year-old had to convert as it was Switzerland who kicked the shootout off.
The Paris Saint-Germain forward, however, saw his effort saved by Yann Sommer, sending the Swiss into jubilant celebrations and France home.

A visibly disappointed Mbappe headed straight for the tunnel after being consoled by a few of his teammates, but Deschamps has since stated that "nobody can be annoyed" with the striker.
He continued by insisting that "when you take the responsibility, it can happen", before revealing that Mbappe is "obviously very affected by it", according to Fox Sports.
All in all, it was a tournament to forget for the Real Madrid-linked attacker who departs the competition having not scored a single goal from 12 shots over the four matches he played. Furthermore, six of those efforts came in France's loss to Switzerland, although none of them were on target.
Mbappe took to Instagram after the game to apologise for his miss, writing: "I'm sorry about this penalty. I wanted to help the team but I failed.
