Date: 25 October 2017
Venue: Red Bull Arena
Bayern Munich advanced to the next round of the DFB Pokal after defeating RB Leipzig 5-4 on penalties on Wednesday evening.
The first 20 minutes proved to be a quiet affair as neither side managed to carve out a clear-cut chance.
The hosts were then awarded a penalty in the 34th minute, but the referee changed his mind and awarded a free-kick just outside the box after consulting with his assistant. Leipzig weren't able to capatlise from the free-kick.
Robert Lewandowski created a chance for Bayern just before the halftime break when he managed to pick out Corentin Tolisso, who fired straight at goalkeeper Peter Gulacsi from close range.
10 minutes into the second half, Leipzig were reduced to 10 men when Naby Keita picked up his second yellow card of the game.
Leipzig received a lifeline in the 67th minute when they awarded a penalty after Jerome Boateng brought down Yussuf Poulsen in the box. Emil Forsberg stepped up and converted the spot-kick, 1-0.
Bayern hit back in the 73rd minute as Thiago Alcantara powered home a fine header after being picked out by Boateng, 1-1.
Chances were few and far between in the final 15 minutes of the second half, as the game was forced into extra time.
However, extra-time failed to produce a winner, and the game went to a penalty shoot-out, where Bayern held their nerve to triumph and secure their spot in the third round.
