The Englishman was in all the headlines when he left Manchester United for Real in 2003, where he played 159 games and won one La Liga title.

Beckham left for La Galaxy in the MLS after his contract at the Santiago Bernabeu ran down, but he has now admitted he couldn't agree a new contract with the president at the time.

"I had a four-year contract and I'd talked to Florentino about renewing it for another four," he said, according to Marca.

"Florentino left and there was no agreement with the new president.

"I wanted to stay, but everything changed when Florentino left."

The former midfielder also gave his opinion on who will win La Liga this season, insisting that Real will emerge victorious.

"My money's on Real Madrid alone this season," he added.

"We're on good form with a good coach and the season is looking interesting, with other good teams up there as well.

"Real Madrid will always be in my heart."
