2018 FIFA World Cup, Group B
Teams: Portugal vs Spain
Date: 15 June
Time: 20:00
Venue: Fisht Olympic Stadium
In a match-up between two European giants, 2010 FIFA World Cup champions Spain face 2016 UEFA European Championship winners Portugal. It will be only their second ever meeting in a World Cup after Spain beat Portugal 1-0 in the quarter-final on their way to the title at the 2010 showpiece in South Africa.
Overall, the two sides have met on 35 occasions, with Spain boasting 16 wins to Portugal's six. La Furia Roja enter the game on the back of 20 unbeaten games since their exit from Euro 2016. However, it remains to be seen how the sacking of Julen Lopetegui just two days ago has affected the team.
Portugal, meanwhile, have lost only two of their past 18 games – and one of those defeats came after penalties at the 2017 FIFA Confederations Cup – going into the tournament. A Selecao captain and all-time record scorer Cristiano Ronaldo will surely be keen to leave his mark on the tournament too, having scored just once at his previous three World Cups.
