UEFA Champions League
Result: Manchester City 1-2 FC Basel (5-2 on agg.)
Date: 07 March 2018
Venue: Etihad
Manchester City progressed to the quarterfinals of the UEFA Champions League, despite suffering a 2-1 loss to FC Basel in the last-16 second leg.
City were virtually already through to the next round before a ball was even kicked on the night, having thumped Basel 4-0 in the first leg.
However, the hosts wasted no time in getting the opening goal on the night as the returning Gabriel Jesus slotted home from close range after some good build-up involving Leroy Sane and Bernardo Silva in the eighth minute.
Basel did level matters in the 17th minute as Mohammed Elyounoussi collected a pass from Luca Zuffi before smashing the ball past Claudio Bravo.
Elyounoussi had another chance to put Basel ahead on 32 minutes but the Egyptian lost his balance and fired from 12-yards out.
That proved to be the final chance of the half as the sides went into the break level.
Pep Guardiola's charges continued to dominate in the second half but they found it tough to break down the Basel defence.
Basel then took a shock lead in the 72nd minute as Elyounoussi turned provider to pick out Lang, who rifled the ball into the top corner.
The Citizens pushed for an equaliser in the closing stages of the second half, but the visitors remained resolute to claim the win.
Luckily for Guardiola's charges, they still advance to the next round, having won the tie 5-2 on aggregate.
