UEFA Champions League Report: Bayern Munich v Chelsea 08 August 2020

Result: Bayern Munich 4-1 Chelsea (7-1 on aggregate)

Date: 08 August 2020

Venue: Allianz Arena

Bayern Munich cruised to the quarter-finals of the UEFA Champions League after thrashing Chelsea 4-1 in their last 16 second-leg clash on Saturday evening.

Bayern made only two changes from their 3-0 win in the first-leg as Leon Goretzka and Ivan Perisic came to the fore while the Blues had enforced changes with Christian Pulisic, Pedro and Cesar Azpilicueta all injured from the FA Cup final while Willian did not travel with the squad.

Frank Lampard's charges had a horrible start, as the Bavarians were awarded a penalty in the eighth minute after shot-stopper Willy Caballero brought down Robert Lewandowsk, who slotted home from 12 yards.

Hansi-Dieter Flick's troops doubled their lead in the 24th minute with Lewandowski sending Perisic clear on goal and the Croat kept his composure to slot past the helpless Caballero.

Chelsea thought that they had pulled a goal back just before the half-hour mark after Callum Hudson-Odoi sent a bullet strike past goalkeeper Manuel Neuer but the goal was disallowed for offside in the build-up by the Video Assistant Referee.

Lampard's men finally pulled a goal back on the stroke of half-time after Neuer spilled Emerson's low delivery into the path of Tammy Abraham, who easily tapped home from close range for his side's first goal of the tie.

The Bavarians continued to create chances early in the second stanza but they were let down by their finishing and just after the hour-mark, Flick made a double change, one enforced as Jerome Boateng succumbed to injury and he was replaced by Niklas Sule while Philippe Coutinho came on for Perisic, in a tactical switch.

Bayern eventually made it 3-1 with 14 minutes left of the contest after Corentin Tolisso volleyed home inside the box after he was found unmarked by Lewandowski's lofted pass.

Lewandowski rounded off the scoring in the final the last six minutes with a close range header from a sublime cross by Alvaro Odriozola to complete his brace and send the Bundesliga champions the quarter-finals.
