UEFA Champions League Match Report: Chelsea 6-0 Maribor 21 October 2014
Result: Chelsea 6-0 Maribor   Date: 21 October 2014   Venue: Stamford Bridge
Chelsea consolidated their place at the top of Group G with a 6-0 demolition of Maribor in the UEFA Champions League on Tuesday.   The away side almost silenced Stamford Bridge in the opening five minutes when they attacked down the flank before crossing for Damjan Bohar, but he headed over the bar.   The Blues appealed for a penalty in the 10th minute as Oscar went down in the area with a Maribor hand on his shoulder, but the referee waved it away.   It was Loic Remy who popped up for the hosts to score the first goal of the match. John Terry provided a perfectly weighted pass from the halfway line to send Remy into space. The Frenchman did the rest with a low shot from 20 yards.   Unfortunately for the goalscorer, he was forced off the pitch with an injury in the 16th minute, giving Chelsea legend Didier Drogba an unexpectedly lengthy night on the field.   The hosts were awarded a great opportunity to double their lead shortly after Remy's strike. Willian's pass into the Maribor area hit Ales Mertelj's arm, handing the Blues a soft penalty. Drogba stepped up and delivered a clinical finish from the spot.   Jose Mourinho's men were three goals clear after only 30 minutes as Terry finished off Cesc Fabregas's assist after Eden Hazard's slick dribble from 50 yards out. Terry seemed to be just offside when he received the ball from Fabregas, but the flag stayed down.   The result was put well and truly beyond doubt in the 54th minute. Willian played in left-back Felipe Luis who skipped over a tackle before crossing for Hazard to put across goal and find the back of the net via Mitja Viler's heel.   Chelsea extended their dominant lead even further with 13 minutes left to play. The referee awarded a second penalty to the hosts after Branislav Ivanovic was brought down in the area and Hazard slotted it unabashedly.    The Blues weren't quite finished and added a sixth in the 90th minute. A long pass from Nathan Ake found Hazard who cut inside his man before a superb finish to underline their dominance on the night.
