Goals from Cristiano Ronaldo and Marcelo handed Real Madrid a 2-0 win over Schalke 04 in their UEFA Champions League first leg Last 16 clash.
After a cagey opening, the first effort at goal arrived in the 24th minute as Klaas Jan Huntelaar's low effort from distance was palmed away by Iker Casillas.
Madrid then sprung into action two minutes later, Dani Carvajal picked out Ronaldo inside the area and the Portuguese made no mistake from six-yards out to give his side the lead.
Ronaldo came close to netting Madrid's second in the 34th minute but his powerful free-kick forced Timon Wellenreuther into a fine save.
Isco had the opportunity to increase Madrid's advantage in the 71st minute but the midfielder blasted over from close range, after being played in by Gareth Bale.
Schalke nearly levelled matters minutes later but Felix Platte's stunning volley from the edge of the area was kept out by the crossbar.
Los Blancos eventually sealed the win in the 79th minute, as Marcelo collected a pass from Ronaldo before curling a right-footed effort into the top corner.
In Wednesday's other Champions League fixture, Danilo cancelled out Derlis Gonzalez's first half strike, as FC Basel and FC Porto played out to a 1-1 draw in their first leg tie.
