UEFA Champions League
Result: Atletico Madrid 2-0 Galatasaray
Date: 25 November 2015
Venue: Vicente Calderon
Antoine Griezmann bagged a brace to hand Atletico Madrid a 2-0 win over Galatasaray at the Vicente Calderon on Wednesday evening.
After a quiet opening to the game, the visitors nearly broke the deadlock in the 11th minute when Wesley Sneijder's low effort sailed inches wide of the upright.
However, Atletico went ahead two minutes later as Gabi's delightful cross from the right found Antoine Griezmann, who powered home a fine header from six-yards out.
Galatasaray were then forced into an early change, as Jason Denayer suffered a hamstring injury and was replaced by Olcan Adin
The visitors struggled to string a few passes together whenever they regained possession of the ball, which denied them the chance of threatening the Atletico back-line.
Depsite Atletico's, the score remained 1-0 in favour of Diego Simeone's charges at the halftime break.
The home side nearly doubled their lead shortly after the halftime break, as Koke's effort from distance forced Muslera into a superb save.
Simeone' charges eventually doubled their advantage in the 65th minute, as Gabi and Griezmann combined once again, with the latter tapping from close range for his second of the game.
Oliver Torres should have added a third goal in the 73rd minute, as the midfielder broke into the box, before attempting to lob Muslera, who did well to get finger-tips to the effort.
The home side managed to see out the final stages of the second half with ease and have now moved one step closer to securing qualification to the knockout stage.
The win sees Atletico move level on points with Benfica, who were held to a 2-2 draw by Astana.
