Serie A Report: Chievo v Juventus 18 August 2018

Serie A

Teams: Chievo 2-3 Juventus

Date: 18 August 2018

Venue: Stadio Marc'Antonio Bentegodi

Cristiano Ronaldo endured a frustrating afternoon in front of goal as Juventus began the Serie A season with a thrilling 3-2 win over Chievo.

Ronaldo was handed a start alongside and led the attack, while he was flanked by Paulo Dybala, Juan Cuadrado and Douglas Costa.

However, Juve's first goal came from a surprising source with Sami Khedira smashing the ball home from close range after just three minutes.

Ronaldo nearly opened his account in the 18th minute as he latched onto a pass from Cuadrado before drilling a low effort just wide of the upright.

It was one-way traffic in the first half, but the visitors were let down by their decision-making in the final third.

Chievo did manage to pull level in the 38th minute as Stepinski rose well in the box to power home a header, which also proved to be the last bit of action in the half.

Ten minutes into second half, The home side were awarded a penalty after Giaccherini was brought down under the challenge from Joao Cancelo.

Giaccherini, a former Juve player, took responsibility and converted the spot-kick to put Chievo in the lead.

Ronaldo nearly pulled the Serie A champions level in the 66th minute but his powerful strike, which looked destined for the top corner, was palmed away by Sorrentino.

The equaliser eventually arrived with 15 minutes remaining as the ball deflected in off Chievo's Mattia Bani for the own goal, despite Leonardo Bonucci's celebrations.

The victory almost was secured in the 87th minute as substitute Mario Mandzukic looked to have got the third goal, but the strike was ruled out for a handball.

However, Juve did seal the win in stoppage time as Federico Bernardeschi poked home from close range
