Gennaro Gattuso Confirms AC Milan Exit

Gennaro Gattuso

AC Milan legend and 2006 FIFA World Cup winner Gennaro Gattuso has confirmed he will leave his post as head coach of the Serie A giants after they failed to qualify for next season's UEFA Champions League.

The 41-year-old saw his Rossoneri outfit secure a 3-2 victory over SPAL on the final day of the 2018/19 Serie A campaign, but this was not enough to clinch a Champions League berth as Milan missed out on a top four spot by one point.

Gattuso took over the reins at Milan from former coach Vincenzo Montella in November 2017, and was in charge of the Rossoneri for 82 games across all competitions, registering 40 victories, 22 losses and 20 draws.

Gattuso confirmed his departure from the club in an official interview with Italian publication La Repubblica, and insisted he is departing the club on good terms despite enduring a torrid final season in charge of the club.

"My decision to leave AC Milan's bench has not been easy, but I had to make it," Gattuso is quoted as saying.

"It's been a hard choice but one I put thought into. I have given up two years left on my contract because my history with this club will never be about money."

Lazio boss Simone Inzaghi and Sampdoria tactician Marco Giampaolo have been linked as favourites to succeed Gattuso in Milan's hot seat.
