Real Madrid Beat Arsenal On Penalties After Four-Goal Thriller

Real Madrid Beat Arsenal On Penalties After Four-Goal Thriller

Outcast Gareth Bale was on target for Real Madrid as they beat Arsenal on penalties in the early hours of this morning, in an International Champions Cup match that saw two red cards and one seemingly bad injury.

The drama started early at the FedEx Field in the US when Los Blancos defender Nacho was sent off in the ninth minute for a deliberate handball in the box.

Having received his first yellow card just moments before, Nacho's moment of madness cost him a second booking, with Alexandre Lacazette converting from the spot to give the Gunners the lead.

In the 24th minute, African superstar Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang made it 2-0 after rounding goalkeeper Keylor Navas. Lacazette was once again involved, setting up his strike partner with a fine ball through the Real defence.

Arsenal then also went down to 10 men when Sokratis Papastathopoulos was sent off for a second bookable offence five minutes before half-time. While the Greek international did commit an obvious foul on Luka Modric, some feel it was perhaps a harsh sending off.

With Zinedine Zidane making a few changes at the break, the Spanish giants looked to pull one back, and eventually did when the unwanted Bale latched on to a loose ball in the box. There was not much of a celebration from the Welshman, but the goal did spark life into his team.

Just three minutes later, Spain international Marco Asensio equalised for Los Blancos, scoring with a well-timed first-time effort following a brilliant pass from Brazilian left-back Marcelo.

The 23-year-old pulled up while running just afterwards, though, and was stretchered off the field just six minutes after his strike, with early reports suggesting the attacker could serve a long spell on the sidelines.

Unai Emery's team threw away their lead with some poor defending, but managed to hold out until the penalty shootout that took place immediately after the 90th minute.

While Bale missed his effort from the spot, the likes of Isco, Raphael Varane and Vinicius Junior were able to find the back of the net, with Granit Xhaka, Nacho Monreal and Robbie Burton missing their chances for Arsenal. Real won the shootout 3-2, but it was a fairly even contest.

Bayern Munich 1-0 AC Milan

Germany international Leon Goretzka scored the only goal in Bayern Munich's 1-0 win over AC Milan in the International Champions Cup.
