The former Los Blancos superstar is currently plying his trade for Fluminense in Brazil, having joined the club from Greek club Olympiacos in February.

Marcelo, 35, was playing the Brazilian giants in a Copa Libertadores clash on Tuesday, but it is a match he will quickly want to forget after his accidental stamp on Argentinos Juniors defender Luciano Sanchez in the 58th minute.

While running with the ball, the ex-Selecao international inadvertently landed on the opponent's leg, breaking it instantly.

For his challenge, he was handed a straight red card before leaving the field appearing seriously distressed.

Marcelo took to social media after the match, which ended 1-1, to share his feelings, calling what happened "a very difficult moment".

"Today, I had to experience a very difficult moment on the pitch," he wrote, according to the Daily Star.

"I have inadvertently injured a colleague. I want to wish you the best possible recovery, Luciano Sanchez. I send you all the strength in the world!"

Marcelo has represented Fluminense on 28 occasions since his arrival, contributing to six goals.
