French publication L'Equipe has released its annual report of the highest-paid players in France and Europe, with Messi sitting at the top of the ranking.
The FC Barcelona captain is believed to earning €8.3 million (135 million) a month before tax and excluding income from sponsorships and endorsement deals.
He is followed by longstanding rival Ronaldo, who receives €4.5 million (R73 million) per month since moving to Juventus - nearly half of Messi's monthly salary.

Neymar, who is the top earner in Ligue 1, follows in third spot with €3.1 million (R50 million), edging Antoine Griezmann and Luis Suarez's €3 million (R49 million) salary.
Real Madrid duo Gareth Bale and Eden Hazard follow with €2.5 million (R41 million) per month, while Kylian Mbappe sits with a monthly earnings of €1.9 million (R31 million) in eighth position.
David De Gea is currently highest-paid player in England, pocketing €1.8 million (R29 million) from Man United, with Bayern Munich duo Robert Lewandowski and Philippe Coutinho following on €1.7 million (R28 million).

Manchester City's Kevin de Bruyne and Arsenal's Mesut Ozil complete the top earners in Europe, with both receiving €1.6 million (R26 million) respectively.
