The International Centre for Sports Studies (CIES) Football Observatory uses a unique approach to rate players on a match-to-match basis by taking into account pitch production and efficiency at both individual and collective levels.
At the top of the ranking for the first quarter of the year is Lionel Messi following his upturn in form for FC Barcelona.
The 32-year-old has scored 16 goals and assisted another seven strikes in just 12 LaLiga appearances in 2021, helping the Blaugrana win 11 of those games.
It will, though, surprise some that Messi, who received a performance score of 92.5, ranks above Robert Lewandowski on the CIES list.
The Bayern Munich forward has netted 18 times and set up another two goals in 13 Bundesliga games since the turn of the year, helping him to a score of 89.5.

Lewandowski shares second place with Chelsea's Jorginho, who received the same score following the Blues' revival under new manager Thomas Tuchel.
Further down the ranking is Ronaldo in fifth position with a score of 89.3 points. The Juventus superstar is, however, the highest-ranked player in Serie A.
Meanwhile, the best performer from Ligue 1, AS Monaco's Guillermo Maripan, only appears in 11th position – you can see all of Europe's top footballers of 2021 to date, according to CIES, by scrolling through the gallery above!
