On Monday night, the world watched on as Messi rewrote his name into football's history books as he lifted his fifth FIFA Ballon d'Or prize, an achievement unimaginable for most.
Many believe the Argentine was simply born a genius, but there have been many key contributions to his success – one of them being two-time Ballon d'Or winner Ronaldinho.
Messi has often spoke highly of the time he spent playing alongside the Brazilian at the Camp Nou, with many referencing the 28-year-old as Ronaldinho's successor at Barca.
The former AC Milan star, now 35 years old, sent Messi, as well as his Ballon d'Or challengers Cristiano Ronaldo and Neymar, and Women's World Player of the Year Carli Lloyd, a message of congratulations via Instagram.
Here is Ronaldinho's post:
The caption, when translated into English, reads: "Congratulations to my good friend Leo Messi on this gigantic achievement!! After so many victories alongside his colleagues from Barcelona, he came to reclaim the world's best trophy!! Merited!! Congratulations also to Cristiano Ronaldo and Neymar Jr. for the excellent year they had! Women's football was also well represented with Carli Lloyd!!"
Messi received 41.33% of the votes for the award, while Ronaldo got 27.76% and Neymar 7.86%.
