In April 2017, Messi scored a dramatic stoppage time goal in a 3-2 win over Los Blancos at the Santiago Bernabeu, and to celebrate, he took of his match jersey and held in aloft in front of the home team's fans.
Ronaldo and his teammates appeared sick to their stomach at Messi's last-minute winner, but would go on to have the last laugh as they managed to beat their bitter rivals to the 2016/17 LaLiga title.
Images of the Argentine's celebration at Real's home ground did the rounds on social media, and is still often used for anything El Clasico- and Messi-related, although it is a memory Los Blancos supporters would rather forget.
For anyone who has doubted whether Ronaldo and Messi get worked up by one another's successes, an incident a few months later would prove telling, after the Portuguese, perhaps still annoyed with his counterpart's actions, mimicked the Argentine's celebration in a Spanish Super Cup Clasico tie.

Rather fittingly, Ronaldo's copycat celebration took place at the Camp Nou, after he came on as substitute to score in Real's 3-1 victory in the first leg. Like Messi did months earlier, the Portuguese removed his jersey and held it up for everyone to see, although his night did not end as happily as his rival's did the previous season.
Later in that Super Cup tie, Ronaldo was shown a second yellow card after he was adjudged to have dived in the Barcelona box. As expected, he was shown the first yellow after taking off his shirt to celebrate, but made matters worse when he shoved match official Ricardo de Burgos Bengoetxea upon receiving his red card.

As a result, Ronaldo was suspended for five matches, but that might not have been the case had he not responded to Messi's iconic Bernabeu celebration by doing the same thing at the Camp Nou in the following campaign.
