The two teams met in a friendly match in Saudi Arabia on Thursday, but fans in attendance only got to see Messi for a few minutes after Ronaldo was ruled out of the encounter.

In the build-up to the game, Al Nassr head coach Luis Castro confirmed that his compatriot was still recovering from a calf injury and would not be fit enough to participate.

The Herons, meanwhile, named Messi among the substitutes before he was eventually introduced late on.

The Saudi Pro League side found themselves 3-0 up inside the first 12 minutes of the tie following goals from Otavio, Anderson Talisca and former Manchester City defender Aymeric Laporte.

Talisca added his second and his team's fourth of the night shortly after the break, while Mohammed Maran netted Al Nassr's fifth, before Talisca rounded up an impressive hat-trick 17 minutes from time.

Messi's introduction came in the 83rd minute of the match, although the Miami-based side did start proceedings with Jordi Alba at left-back, Sergio Busquets in midfield and Luis Suarez leading the line.
