Lionel Messi has revealed who he thinks is currently the best defender in world football.

The 35-year-old's impressive start to life in Major League Soccer has coincided with the continuation of his brilliant international career.
This past weekend, he made it 104 goals for La Albiceleste as he scored a late free-kick winner against Ecuador in a 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifier.
While the Rosario native was the match-winner on the day, he also praised his backline for the work they did, specifically Cristian Romeo.
The seven-time Ballon d'Or winner even went as far lauding the Tottenham Hotspur man as the best in his position.
"I think he is the best defender in the world at the moment. He played very well and, in my opinion, he was the man of the match," the attacker told Telemundo, as per Mundo Deportivo.
"Having him behind me is the best thing that can happen to me. He always forces me to go forward, because he always wants to play one-on-one against his opponent. I've gotten used to not looking back and that's very good for an attacking player."

The encounter was Argentina's first competitive match since their triumph in Qatar, having played friendlies against Panama, Curacao, Australia and Indonesia, and they have now got their 2026 World Cup qualification campaign off to a winning start.
