The Blaugrana captain stood with his left hand on his hip and his right arm pointed skywards, and the celebration has since been explained via his official website as a tribute to his three sons.
"Leo Messi dedicated his 699th goal as a professional to his three sons," it read on his website.
"And he did it by imitating a pose made by one of the characters in a game they play to pass the time together."

Messi, who has scored 26 goals and assisted a further 18 strikes in 33 matches for Barcelona so far this season, will be back in action when Barca take on Sevilla in a LaLiga fixture on Friday night.
