Longstanding rivals, Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo, have reached the midway point of their season - let's take a look at their stats in La Liga and the Champions League.

The Argentine has played two more games (25), because Ronaldo (23) missed one La Liga game early in the season and his side had one match postponed due to the FIFA Club World Cup.
Ronaldo has scored 33 goals, while Messi sits on 27 in La Liga and the Champions League together - all stats provided by WhoScored. However, if we deduct the Portuguese's 10 penalties, Messi leads in comparison when you look at goals from open play.
Messi has scored 11 of his 27 goals with his weaker right foot, while Ronaldo scored five of his 33 with his weaker left foot.
Ronaldo has scored four with his head, while Messi headed in three goals. Both have scored two from outside the penalty box and Messi is the only of the two who has converted a direct free-kick.
Out of Ronaldo's 33 goals, seven were tap-ins, while Messi has scored five tap-ins.
Both have assisted 10 goals in La Liga and the Champions League, but Messi has created more chances for his teammates (67 to 46).
The 27-year-old completed 84 percent of his passes, while Ronaldo enjoyed success with 82 percent of his passes to teammates. The Argentine has also attempted many more passes then his counterpart (1509 to 855).
In terms of successful dribbles, Messi also dominated with 125 as opposed to 43 from Ronaldo, but the Portuguese has won more aerial duels (52 percent to 41 percent).

The Barcelona star appears to be working harder for his team, winning 19 tackles while Ronaldo has only won two.
Ronaldo, however, has attempted more shots (149 to 121) and has the better accuracy (71 percent to 61 percent).
Overall, Messi has won 17 Man of the Match awards (12 La Liga, 5 in UCL), while Ronaldo was voted the best player on 12 occasions (11 La Liga, 1 UCL).
