Mascherano recently published his own book, The 15 Steps of Leadership, in which he discusses his career and the different things that inspire him.
In the preface of the book, Messi talked about his teammate's leading ability, but also admitted Mascherano gets a little crazy when he is angry.
"He has his days. Sometimes he comes in wanting to talk and make jokes, but he also has crazy days," he said.
"When that's the case, it's better not to talk to him.
"We see him there and no one dares to say anything.
"Masche knows how to handle each situation. He is a very positive leader.
"At the World Cup in Brazil I had the armband, but he was by my side the whole time, fixing each error."
Messi, who is still sidelined through injury, missed Argentina's opening World Cup Qualifying match on Friday, a match they lost 2-0 to Ecuador.
