Lionel Messi stole the show for FC Barcelona during the club's UEFA Champions League win over Borussia Dortmund on Wednesday, and in the process, reached an incredible milestone that takes him one step closer to an all-time record.

Messi took to the field for the 700th time on Wednesday, and marked the occasion by scoring once and assisting twice as Barca confirmed their progression to the knockout stages of the Champions League with a 3-1 win over Dortmund.
The Argentina international is only the second player in the club's history to reach the milestone, and took him a step closer to former teammate Xavi Hernandez's all-time appearance record for the Blaugrana.

According to Transfermarkt, Xavi turned out for Barca on 769 occasions, a tally Messi should surpass before his current deal with the club expires in 2021, provided he remains injury-free.
The 32-year-old also broke an all-time Champions League record with his goal against BVB on Wednesday, becoming the first player to score against 34 unique opponents in the competition.
