While it is Olivier Giroud who is closest to Henry's record of 51 strikes for France, Mbappe has admitted to having his sights set on toppling the 1998 FIFA World Cup winner's tally in a French shirt.
The 23-year-old scored twice for Les Bleus as the world champions humiliated Bafana Bafana in Lille, a game in which Giroud, Wissam Ben Yedder and Matteo Guendouzi also found the back of the net.
Speaking after the match, Mbappe was asked if he believes he can surpass Henry's achievement.
"Of course, it's an objective, I've always wanted to be the first at everything, whether that's with the French team or in club football," he told TF1.
"There's still a long way to go. Nobody's done what Titi [Henry] did. I think I can get there much quicker than people think."
Mbappe has scored 26 goals for France since his senior debut in 2017, while his teammate Giroud is the country's second-best scorer in history with 48 strikes in 112 appearances.
