The 35-year-old, who is set to hang up his boots after announcing he has played his final Major Soccer League season for Orlando City, won the award back in 2007 when he was still with AC Milan.

"It's incredible to win an individual award in a team sport, and also one where everybody wants to be able to say: 'I'm the best,'" he told AS

"I tried to maintain a good level of form and I understood that the award was for what we did as a team. I am always grateful to my teammates at Milan for what we achieved."

There have been many arguments over which player will finally break the Ronaldo/Messi stronghold of the accolade, with the pair having shared the award over the past nine years, and with the Portuguese, who was recently crowned FIFA's The Best Men's Player of the Year, expected to claim his fifth Ballon d'Or in December.

"Football isn't an exact science so it's difficult to say what will happen in the future, but I would say that the next winner of the Ballon d'Or after Cristiano and Messi will be Neymar," Kaka explained when asked who he thought the next potential Ballon d'Or winner could be.
