The 33-year-old showed his respect to his countryman after scoring FC Barcelona's final goal in their 4-0 win over Osasuna on Sunday.
After scoring and celebrating with his teammates, Messi pulled off his Barca shirt to reveal a Newell's Old Boys kit with the No. 10 on the back, and pointed towards the sky.
Newell's were Messi's boyhood club and the first Argentine team Maradona ran out for after his return from Europe in 1993.
The 1986 FIFA World Cup champion made his debut for Newell's during a friendly against Emelec, scoring once, with a six-year-old Messi watching from the stands.
Messi and Maradona's paths crossed several times on and off the pitch, with the fallen hero also coaching the six-time Ballon d'Or winner during his spell in charge of the Argentina national team at the 2014 FIFA World Cup.
