Fabio Capello, who coached the Spanish giants in the 1996/97 season and again in 2006/07, has spilled the beans on his former forward.
The Italian was in charge during Ronaldo's last campaign at the Bernabeu, and explained to Spanish sports website AS why he benched the superstar.
"Look, he weighed 96 kilos. I asked him: 'What did you weigh when you won the World Cup in 2002?' He replied: '84 kilos.' I said: 'Can you get down to 90 at least?' And he couldn't…"
Ronaldo only made seven La Liga appearances under Capello in the first half of the 2006/07 campaign before being sold to AC Milan in the January transfer window.
However, despite the weight issues, Capello still rates the two-time World Cup winner as the best player he has ever coached.
"When I'm asked who the best player I have coached is, I always say Ronaldo. Ronaldo was incredible, the best by a distance. Him and Van Basten," he added.
