The Argentina legend sadly passed away on Wednesday after suffering a cardiac arrest in his sleep.
Maradona, considered by many to be one of the greatest players – if not the greatest – of all time, was often questioned about Messi and Ronaldo.
When he gave what would prove to be his final interview to France Football shortly before his 60th birthday on 30 October, he insisted no one will come close to the two superstars.
"Messi and Cristiano, Cristiano and Messi. For me, these two are a cut above the others," Maradona told France Football.
"I don't see anyone approaching them. Not a single person (will) achieve half of what they do."

Maradona, though, did previously admit that he prefers Messi, although he did also praise Ronaldo.
"I prefer Messi to Cristiano Ronaldo, but I acknowledge that the latter is an animal," he explained, as quoted by the Daily Mirror.
"I wish he was Argentine. He's incredible. He makes me think of Gabriel Batistuta. As soon as he touched the ball, it was a goal."
He also once claimed: "I can't remember having seen Messi play badly.
"There are players who have been touched by a magic wand. We Argentines are proud that Lionel Messi is Argentinian."
