Cristiano Ronaldo & Lionel Messi Beaten To Most Goals In A Calendar Year For The First Time Since 2009

2010 – Lionel Messi (60 goals)

One of Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi has finished as the highest goalscorer in a calendar year since 2010, but that run has now come to an abrupt end.

English striker Harry Kane wrote his name into the history books with his hat-trick for Tottenham Hotspur against Southampton on Tuesday.

His three strikes means he is 2017's top scorer with 56 goals for club and country, becoming the first player other than Messi or Ronaldo to achieve the No. 1 spot since David Villa in 2009. Kane's 56 strikes is, however, the lowest tally since Villa's 43 goals eight years ago.

The most goals ever scored in a single year was 91, which Barcelona and Argentina's Messi achieved in 2012.

The Argentine was leading the way this year with 54 goals until Kane's lethal display in Spurs' 5-2 win over Southampton, while Ronaldo's highest ever tally was his 69 strikes in 2013.

Red-Hot Kane Breaks Two Premier League Records

Kane has already scored 18 league goals for Spurs this season, and is now just four strikes away from bringing up 100 league strikes for the Lilywhites.
