The Portuguese defended his title, becoming the first player to lift the trophy three times in doing so.

Ronaldo can look back at an incredible season, during which his 42 goals in all competitions helped Los Blancos lift the UEFA Super Cup, the FIFA Club World Cup, and their first La Liga title since 2012, and also become the first side to defend the UEFA Champions League trophy.

In particular, the 32-year-old impressed during the final stages of the 2016/17 campaign, netting 16 goals in his last nine games of the season. He first struck five in a UEFA Champions League quarter-final against Bayern Munich, before scoring a hat-trick in the first leg of Real's semi-final against crosstown rivals Atletico Madrid.

In addition, his six goals in his last four La Liga outings were crucial in Real's league title bid, and he finished the 2016/17 campaign with two goals in the Champions League final against Juventus, who had only conceded three strikes during the whole tournament before losing 4-1 to Real in Cardiff.

His 12 goals in the 2016/17 Champions League campaign and abovementioned heroics in the latter stages, along with becoming the first player to score 100 goals in the competition, made Ronaldo the clear favourite to lift the award.

Lionel Messi and Gianluigi Buffon completed the podium, but while the Argentine went home empty-handed, the Italian was named UEFA Champions League goalkeeper of the 2016/17 season.
