In the early hours of Sunday morning, Argentina defeated Brazil 1-0 at the Maracana Stadium to claim the 2021 Copa America title, their first major tournament win since 1993.
As the final whistle sounded, an emotional and exhausted Messi fell to the ground in disbelief before being rushed to and piled on by his Albiceleste colleagues, who seemed to enjoy the moment more for his sake than their own.
Even goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez, whose heroics in their penalty shootout win over Colombia in the semi-finals got them to the final, stated after the game that the victory was for Messi.
"I said I'd rather have it won for Messi than for me. Today, we were able to give it to him. It was what he wanted most in his life," the shot-stopper said, according to Barca Universal.
Messi's former Barcelona teammate Andres Iniesta has also commented on the Argentina captain's latest achievement, saying: "I think for him, on a personal level, it's a weight off his shoulders. He has finally won something with his national team after being close so many times.
"He was impeccable at the Copa America, beyond the goals and the assists. For me, Messi is still the No.1."

The out-of-contract forward enjoyed the victory with his teammates with some big celebrations, and was also spotted having a video call with his family out on the field once the trophy presentation was over.
