As United prepare for the 2024/25 season, personnel changes are being made to Ten Hag's backroom staff.
Ex-striker Van Nistelrooy is expected to join his compatriot's technical team at Old Trafford, along with Go Ahead Eagles manager Rene Hake, whom Ten Hag previously worked with at FC Twente.
According to ESPN, negotiations are still taking place as part of the staff shake-up that will see McCarthy's time at the Red Devils come to an end.
The outlet reports that the South African "is set to leave" when his contract in England expires on Sunday after two years at the club.
For current assistant coaches Mitchell van der Gaag and Steve McClaren, meanwhile, it appears their futures are uncertain.
On the player front, it is claimed the 20-time English champions are looking to get Jadon Sancho and Mason Greenwood off their books permanently in this window.
The former is believed to be available for transfer at £40 million (R958.2 million), while the latter is being monitored by multiple teams across Europe.
