Rangnick: Man Utd Chiefs Didn't Want Me To Sign Haaland & Diaz

Harry Maguire and Ralf Rangnick

According to former Manchester United boss Ralf Rangnick, the club's hierarchy blocked him from signing the likes of Luis Diaz and Erling Haaland.

Ronaldo And Ten Hag Crunch Talks Revealed?

Rangnick took over from Ole Gunnar Solskjaer on an interim basis in November 2021. The German tactician was handed a team that was soon left short-handed up front given that Anthony Martial was set to go out on loan to Sevilla and Mason Greenwood would be suspended indefinitely from the squad after he was charged with attempted rape.

It meant that the onus to score goals was left solely to Cristiano Ronaldo, and although he did manage to find the back of the net 24 times in all competitions by the end of that campaign for the Red Devils, Rangnick tried to persuade the club's board that reinforcements were needed in January.

According to Bild journalist Christian Falk, the 64-year-old recommended that they try to sign the likes of Haaland, Diaz and Dusan Vlahovic, as well as centre-back Josko Gvardiol, but his pleas fell on deaf ears.

In May this year, Rangnick revealed that the club would not sanction a move for an attacker in January.

"The answer at the time was, no, there was no player on the market that could really help us," he said, per The Sun.

"There were a few, Diaz who is now at Liverpool, [Julian] Alvarez who will be at Manchester City in the summer, Vlahovic, who at the time still was with Fiorentina, those are just three of them that come across my mind now.

"I spoke to the board and said shouldn't we at least speak and try and analyse if we could get a player either on loan or as a permanent deal, but in the end the answer was no.

"I still believe that we should have at least tried, if we would've found and been able in 48 hours, 48 hours is short notice but it's still 48 hours, it might have been worth to try and internally discuss but we didn't and it was not done."

Erik ten Hag has since taken over from Rangnick, and the Dutchman has seems to have solved at least part of the attacking problem for the time being by bringing in Antony from Ajax Amsterdam. The Brazilian has scored in three of his six league appearances for United so far
