According to former Manchester United goalkeeper coach Emilio Alvarez, Paul Pogba was "weighed down" by his massive transfer fee when he rejoined the club from Juventus in 2016.
The France international broke the British transfer record when he made his return to UK following a four-year spell with Juve, costing the Red Devils a reported £89.3 million (R1.86 billion) in August 2016.
Although the 27-year-old had major expectations set on his shoulders, many pundits and analysts feel he has not been able to reach his full potential despite his undoubted ability, and former United goalkeeper coach Alvarez believes the midfielder's massive price tag brought with it huge pressure that he struggled with.
"I do know that he is a footballer with all the talent to play at any club in the world. Physically, he is incredibly gifted," Alvarez told Spanish publication AS.
"Where he has problems is the area of the demands that come with being a star signing.
"At (Manchester) United, he was weighed down by the responsibility and the pressure of being a multi-million euro signing.
"He was anxious to show his level. I stayed with him after training and did extra work. I can tell you that he has incredible dexterity, talent, and is incredible athletically.
"His success depends on his head. He needs to make challenges and to be more self-critical. He could be a great signing for (Real) Madrid."
