Leandro Trossard came very close to giving the hosts a dream start in the ninth minute with a cracking strike from the edge of the box that came off the post, before he hit the other upright 11 minutes later from the edge of the box.

Graham Potter' charges were getting closer to breaking the deadlock as Adam Webster powered a good header from close range that De Gea tipped into the crossbar from Neal Maupay's cross on the half-hour.

Greenwood found the back of the net for United two minutes later with a deflected strike unmarked inside the box but the goal was disallowed for offside on Marcus Rashford in the build-up.

Maypay eventually broke the deadlock for Brighton five minutes before the break with a cheeky penalty after Bruno Fernandes brought down pacey wing-back Taariq Lamptey inside the box.

However, Brighton's celebrations were short-lived as United levelled matters three minutes later after Matic's cut-back at the back post from Fernandes' free-kick forced Lewis Dunk to turn the ball into the back of his own net.

United were almost on the back foot again just two minutes inside the second stanza after Aaron Connolly went down inside the box in a tussle for the ball with Paul Pogba and the referee initially pointed to the spot but after reviewing the incident on the Video Assistant Referee monitor, he reversed his decision.

After having another goal disallowed for offside, Rashford eventually made it 2-1 for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's troops two minutes thereafter with an impressive solo strike from close range after being sent through on goal by Fernandes.

After Solly March and Trossard were denied by the woodowork again, the Red Devils were punished as March snatched the equaliser deep in stopppage time with a downward header and cleared Harry Maguire's header off the line.

There was drama in the tail end as the referee was alerted of a handball by Maupay inside the box from Maguire's header after blowing the final whistle and after checking the incident on the VAR monitor, the referee pointed to the spot, where Fernandes stepped up and fired his spot-kick into the top corner to snatch a 3-2 victory for the Red Devils.
