The France forward is heading into the final six months of his contract, and will be allowed to speak to the other clubs from 1 January 2022.
Real Madrid have been heavily linked with Mbappe in the past few years, and reportedly launched a couple of bids for him in the previous transfer window, although it now seems they will wait for his contract to expire before signing him as a free agent.
Ibrahimovic, who spent four years at PSG, has now insisted that the 2018 FIFA World Cup winner needs a more structured environment.
"It's true that I advised [Mbappe] to leave the club," he told the Italian outlet Corriere della Sera.
"He needs a more structured environment, like the one at Real Madrid.
"But then I told the PSG president not to sell him."
Mbappe currently sits third on PSG's all-time leading scorers list with 141 goals, and needs 16 more to overtake Ibrahimovic in second spot.
