Los Blancos beat Sevilla 2-0 on Saturday to cement their top four hopes following a pair of late goals from Casemiro and Luka Modric.
However, first-choice left-back Marcelo found himself on the bench once again for the match, with 22-year-old Sergio Reguilon starting the must-win game for Santiago Solari's side instead.
Spanish journalist Juan Ramon de la Morena has since told El Transistor that Marcelo was benched because he was "more than a stone" above the specified weight target set for him by the club's doctors.
The 30-year-old, who has been plagued by injuries this campaign, has struggled to find his best form in 2018/19, and has started only 11 LaLiga games while also finding himself on the bench in the club's past two matches.
Marcelo has also been linked with a move away from the Santiago Bernabeu, with Italian giants Juventus believed to be keen on reuniting him with Cristiano Ronaldo.
However, the Brazilian recently stated that he has no interest in leaving the 2017/18 UEFA Champions League winners.
"It's never entered my mind to leave and look for another option," he told Club del Deportisita, as cited by The Sun.
"I have always done everything possible to stay at Real Madrid and I've never thought about playing time.
"If I had 15 minutes in every game, I'd give everything in those 15 minutes to play more and win more."
