Guinea-Bissau-born Anssumane Fati was a second-half substitute in Barca's 5-2 rout of Real Betis on Sunday, writing his name into the club's history books in the process.
He became the second-youngest Barca player ever to make his debut in LaLiga, making his first senior appearance on Sunday at the age 16 years and 298 days – only Vincenc Martinez was younger when he debuted at the age of 16 years and 280 days in 1941.
Fati also became the 15th African player to play for the Catalan giants, and – along with Carles Perez – he earned some praise from club captain Messi, who missed the game against Betis due to a minor injury.
"A great game from everyone, our first points in LaLiga this season, and I'm very happy for the kids from La Masia fulfilling their dreams of making an official first team appearance at the Camp Nou," the Argentine wrote on Instagram, alongside a picture of him hugging Fati.
Fati has thus joined the list of African stars who have run out for Barcelona, with Senegalese right-back Moussa Wague and Ghana's Kevin-Prince Boateng the other players from the continent to have played for Barca this year.
There have been a number African stars in the club's illustrious history. Samuel Eto'o is the most-capped African at Barca, having made 199 official appearances for the club, during which he scored 130 goals and lifted eight trophies.
Seydou Keita is the African player who has claimed the most silverware with the Blaugrana, having picked up 14 trophies between 2008 and 2012. Eto'o, Keita and Yaya Toure were part of Pep Guardiola's famous Barcelona squad that won the sextuple in 2009.
