The organisers of the annual Ballon d'Or award, France Football, recently compiled a 50-man list of the world's greatest coaches across all eras.

According to SportWitness, the criteria for the list was the following: "Trophies won, influence on the game, their personality and how they have influenced managers who have followed".

Despite being the most successful coach of all time, in addition to widely being considered the greatest ever tactician, Ferguson, who won 38 trophies during a 27-year stint with the Red Devils, ranked in at No. 2 on the podium.

Legendary Dutch manager Rinus Michels, whose coaching career spanned the length of more than three decades with Ajax Amsterdam, FC Barcelona, the Netherlands national team, FC Koln and Bayer Leverkusen, pipped Ferguson to the top coaching spot.

At club and international level, Michels enjoyed success with every the team he coached. The only major trophy that alluded him was the FIFA World Cup, which he came narrowly close to winning, finishing with a runners-up medal in 1974 after the Netherlands were defeated 2-1 by West Germany in the final.

Michels, who is credited as the inventor of "Total Football", was also named Coach of the Century by FIFA in 1999.

Arrigo Sacchi, Johan Cruyff, and former Barcelona and Bayern Munich coach Guardiola complete the top five, respectively, compiled by France Football.

Guardiola, who was voted FIFA World Coach of the Year in 2011, is the only Premier League manager who ranks in the top 10, while Liverpool coach Jurgen Klopp sits at 27th position and Newcastle United manager Rafael Benitez comes in at 37th.

Marcelo Bielsa, who is currently at the helm of Championship outfit Leeds United, is the only tactician from England's second division who forms part of the list.

Zinedine Zidane is the highest-placed Frenchman, ranking in at 22nd, while long-time Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger came in at 32nd.
