The 9 Players With The Most Red Cards In Football History

Vinnie Jones – 12

With Lionel Messi recently being sent off for a moment of madness in a cup final, here are the nine players with the most red cards in the history of football.

The FC Barcelona forward was given his marching orders during the Catalan club's 3-2 loss to Athletic Bilbao in the Spanish Super Cup final on Sunday, and while it was considered a moment in which the Argentine lost his temper, it was only the third sending-off of his career.

Messi would need to see many more reds in his career to see his name among those players with the most sending-offs in the game's history; in fact, he would need another nine just to draw level with former Premier League defensive midfielder Vinnie Jones.

The former Wimbledon and Leeds United star was known as a hardman throughout his playing days, and was ordered to leave the pitch 12 times. Despite that number being quite high, some might be surprised it is not higher.

Ex-Brazil international Felipe Melo, who turned out for Juventus between 2009 and 2011, has received 14 red cards in his career, while another ex-Bianconeri man, Paolo Montero, features slightly further up the list with 21 sending-offs.

Real Madrid captain Sergio Ramos, who is widely recognised as one of the sport's "dirtiest" players, is third in the all-time ranking with 26 red cards, some way off the top spot but only one away from second place.
